Ka Hula Piko is on Saturday May 4

Molokai's annual tribute to hula, which according to legend, was birthed on Molokai, happens on Saturday, May 4.  Educational events leading up to it begin on Thursday.  Ka Hula Piko has been carried on after the passing of renowned Kumu Hula John Kaimikaua.  For detailed information, go to http://kahulapiko.com

We are saddened that Molokai Kumu Hula Moana passed away a short time ago after a lengthy illness.  Molokai has lost another icon.

Ka Hula Piko never fails to entertain and educate.  It is an important event around which many people schedule their visits to Molokai.  This hula tradition makes it very clear that our Kupuna need to be cherished  and honored as long as they are with us and beyond.

  1. Hi! I've been debating on moving to Molokai for work. How's it like living in Molokai? Do I need a car to get around or can I rely on a trusty bike and the occasional taxi?

  2. Debating whether to move to Molokai? It depends what your needs are. It's a great place for R & R. As for getting around, there is now a free scheduled bus service that is island-wide. The bus and a bike might get you around, but if you like to do things spontaneously, you will need a car. There are only 2 gas stations, both in Kaunakakai, the main town and gas is over $5 per gallon. Getting stuck without fuel on the east or west ends of the island would be unpleasant, but fortunately, most of the residents here are kind and helpful.

  3. Thanks for your response. I have a skype interview at the hospital in the area. I'm excited and nervous about the idea of moving to Molokai island. Is it easy to find a room for rent? I'm not new to island life although this will be the first island i've lived in where a majority of people speak english so this will be fun.

  4. There are many residents who rent rooms or small apartments in their homes. Ranch Camp is a subdivision near the hospital which would be very convenient and reasonably priced.

  5. Hi Hello Again, if I could ask you another question. Is internet easily accessible on Molokai? If I want to skype or stream, is it decent enough?

  6. Aloha Joey - High-speed internet is available on Molokai by cable or from the phone company. However, service may not be available in all areas. It's best to inquire about that when you are looking for a place to locate on the island.
